This study aims to address borderline personality disorder and the self-destructive cycle, with an emphasis on the influence of substance abuse. The disorder is characterized by a pervasive pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affectivity, preceded by intense impulsivity and interfering with cognitive, behavioral, and emotional domains. From this perspective, the individual exhibits self-destructive behaviors, driven by impulsive instincts, and correlated with comorbidities. Among them, substance abuse stands out, which worsens the clinical picture, intensifying impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and behavioral instability, contributing to the emergence and maintenance of self-destructive behaviors. The research was conducted through a bibliographic review, based on the analysis of scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025. Thus, it is concluded that substance abuse implies the intensification of symptoms, reinforcing the need for interdisciplinary care aimed at promoting greater emotional stability and quality of life for affected individuals.
